THE BLIND SIDE

So this is the film that won Sandra Bullock the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role and an Academy Award for Best Actress. . . . hmmm.

THE HURT LOCKER

The first film to win “Best Director” for a woman, Kathryn Bigelow, was a disappointment for me. In “The Hurt Locker,” the three elite dudes of the Bravo Company's bomb disposal unit are in Baghdad when their team leader Sergeant Matt Thompson Guy Pearce (who established himself as a player in “LA Confidential” but is now on some unwatchable TV show) is killed in action.

BROKEN EMBRACES

This Spanish subtitled film wove its way into my consciousness via newspaper and magazine photographs of the scrumptious Penelope Cruz and her sexy Spanish director Pedro Almondóvar (referred do as “one of the most daring and accomplished filmmakers, etc. etc.). Cruz has been called Almondóvar’s “constant muse” in print more times than I can remember.
