Don’t forget the importance of safe food handling during the holiday

Gaining weight isn't the only health concern people need to be wary of when it comes to eating delicious foods this holiday season. As illustrated by the recent listeria outbreak from cantaloupes out of Jensen Farms of Colorado - which killed at least 29 people - there is an ongoing risk of food-borne illness. To limit that risk, there are some basic guidelines to keep in mind when preparing meals at holiday time.

Just because we don't have to actually pick, gather, milk, hunt or fish for our food doesn't mean that we can walk into a market in a daze and load up the cart without thinking. We have to be as vigilant as if we're out on the savanna scouting for the next meal. We need to be modern hunter-gatherers.

Our bodies need hydration every day because water is the principal constituent of all body fluids, is essential for proper metabolic functioning, and is necessary to flush toxins. Dehydration is a major cause of accelerated aging. You want to stay hydrated by drinking half of your body weight in ounces of purified water every day.
