The idea of drinking soda, especially Diet Coke gags me. There’s so much wrong with sodas that I can hardly begin.
But first I want to talk about mineral water. Hippocrates was among the first to preach the benefits of mineral water, and in this blog I’ll attempt to offer some of the reasons why you should switch from soda to mineral water.
We drink Pellegrino. (I find Perrier too salty tasting.) San Pellegrino originates from a thermal spring at the foot of the Italian Alps, 70 kilometers northeast of Milan. The village of San Pellegrino was established in 1395 and named after the martyr of the same name who was tortured and beheaded for attempting to evangelize the then Jupiter-worshipping French.
Leonardo da Vinci was a big fan of the so-called miraculous waters and visited San Pellegrino to sample the water himself. In 1827 better roadways allowed the water to be exported, and then in 1899 the water company was purchased by the Swiss company Nestlé and bottling and exporting began in earnest.
So what is the difference between carbonated water and carbonated soft drinks? A lot.
Carbonated sodas are aerated with carbon dioxide gas. Mineral water that comes from the artesian wells, passes through layers of minerals including carbonates, and absorbs the carbon dioxide gas released by the carbonates. Now you have natural, delightfully delicious, effervescent, mineral water.
Mineral water is alkaline and helps the body maintain a homeostatic pH level in a world where we are bombarded with acidic insults, everything from second hand smoke to fluoride in water (all chemicals and toxins are acidic, as is sugar).
Exercising is acidic because it produces lactic acid (the reason you feel stiff and sore after exercise). The alkaline bicarbonate in mineral water helps buffer that acidity—thus helping you recover from exercise by increasing the transport of lactic acid out of the muscles, reducing fatigue, and improving athletic performance.
Epidemiological studies have linked drinking mineral water with lowered cardiovascular disease in various countries. And Hippocrates and Leonardo were right about mineral water improving digestion.
The alkaline biocarbonate in mineral water prevents acid blood and bone leeching of calcium—so it is good for your bones!
Ninety-five percent of Americans each drink 56 gallons of soda per year.
All sodas are made with tap water, which has been treated with chorine and fluoride that are known to kill cells and cause cancer. Tap water also contains trihalomethanes, lead, cadmium, all known carcinogens.
Phosphoric acid in sodas can interfere with the body’s ability to use calcium, which can lead to osteoporosis. There has been one study recently that disputes this claim, but if you consider that phosphoric acid is acidic and an acidic pH causes the leaching of calcium from the bones then it stands to reason that drinking acidic sodas would be bad for your bones. If nothing else, it means that you’re not consuming bone healthy drinks like natural, whole, raw milk, for example. Phosphoric acid also neutralizes the hydrochloric acid in your stomach, interferes with digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Sodas also contain sugar, which is food for cancer cells, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, mood swings, and depression, fattiness, premature aging and I could go on.
Aspartame causes cancer and neurological diseases. It also metabolizes into formaldehyde, which degrades cellular structures and so diet soda drinking women have more flubber on their butts and thighs. Please read Death by Supermarket for more on aspartame.
Caffeine is not good for you. It jangles your nerves, promotes insomnia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, depletes vitamins and minerals, causes lumpy breasts, birth defects, contributes to cancer.
The health of our entire nation would take an immediate, dramatic upswing if sodas were eliminated and people switched to mineral water.
LEONARDO DA VINCI DRANK PELLIGRINO NOT DIET COKE
